Five Festive Wine & Movie Pairings

Five Festive Wine & Movie Pairings
December 7, 2020 Ty Caton

The countdown to Christmas is officially here, and we are watching as many holiday movies as possible. With so many to choose from, we’ve put together the top five movies we’ll be watching this month– complete with a  Ty Caton wine pairing to enjoy on a cozy night-in.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
The family favorite, feel-good holiday movie that makes our hearts grow three sizes, this film embodies the true spirit of Christmas. The Grinch has made it his mission to destroy Christmas for the Whos in Whoville, enlisting the help of his reluctant sidekick and pup, Max. That is until he meets Cindy Lou Who, who shows him the true meaning of Christmas.

A heartwarming Christmas movie deserves a wine that will warm you up from the inside. We’ll be over here drinking the 2019 Estate Ty’s Red (maybe even trying Scarlett’s favorite mulled wine recipe), snacking on some very buttery popcorn, and enjoying the Jim Carrey version of this movie.

Home Alone 2
In the sequel to the classic holiday film Home Alone, Home Alone 2 finds Kevin McCallister separated from his family at Christmas once again. But this time, he’s taking on the Big Apple. He’s up to his usual antics, conning his way into a room at the Plaza Hotel and exploring the city solo when he runs into the Sticky Bandits (formerly the Wet Bandits) plotting to rob a toy store. It’s up to Kevin to stop them in this funny and cheeky Christmas movie.

We can’t think of a more fun wine to pair with this Christmas comedy than our 2019 Estate enTycement. This wine is a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon that perfectly pairs with Kevin’s favorite pizza – cheese with extra cheese!

A Christmas Story
We all reminisce on that one Christmas from our childhoods as Ralphie Parker does through several vignettes in A Christmas Story. When he was nine years old, all he wanted for Christmas was a Red
Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle, but everyone told him no because “[he’ll] shoot an eye out.” When Christmas morning arrived, Ralphie opened every single present under the tree
to no avail, until his father presented his last and final gift, a Red Ryder air rifle.

No better pairing for a movie about reminiscing than a wine with a history. The 2019 Estate Ballfield Syrah was named for the property’s history – the Syrah block was once home to a baseball field owned by the Boys & Girls Club of San Francisco. Grab a bottle, some hot dogs, and potato chips for dinner and a movie.

The Family Man
Starring Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni, The Family Man is your classic “what could have been” Christmas drama where Jack gets a glimpse into what his life could have been like if he chose love over his career.

We have to go with a classic Moon Mountain District wine for a classic Christmas movie – the 2017 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Pair it with cheese-dusted popcorn for a savory movie experience or dark chocolate-covered popcorn balls if you’re in the mood for something sweet.

Die Hard
We are putting an end to this debate – Die Hard IS a Christmas movie. On Christmas Eve, John McClane visits his estranged wife, Holly, for a holiday party hijacked by terrorists. McClane manages to avoid being captured, which sets the stage for an explosive, action-packed evening to save all the hostages, including Holly.

Ultimately, Die Hard can be paired with whatever wine you have open, but we recommend something as big and bold as this movie. Our 2020 Estate Upper Bench Block Three Bordeaux Blend is just the wine – a blend of 67% Merlot and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon with rich, ripe cherry aroma violets, blackberry, currant, and a touch of chocolate. Grab a box of Snow Caps, and prepare to be at the edge of your seat all night!

Whether you prefer a movie that warms your heart, makes you laugh, brings a tear to your eye, or has you at the edge of your seat, there is a movie on this list for you. Don’t forget to pick up your favorite Ty Caton wines, so you’re ready for all your Christmas movie nights this month! If you don’t see your favorite movie on our list, let us know what it is and what wine you’d pair with it by tagging us on Instagram or Facebook
